Including a brief history of the waterways of Norfolk & Suffolk and a description of the work needed to maintain this Fleet of traditional wooden sailing cruisers to its original high standard.
This fascinating talk concentrates on the remarkable history of Hunter’s boat yard and the fleet of beautiful wooden cabin yachts that Percy and his sons built between 1932 and 1949.
The Hunter Fleet is now the only complete fleet of Norfolk Broads hire boats which is still operating from its original base with very few changes. To put the story into context, the talk starts with a short history of the Norfolk Broads and the tourist industry which started in the 1880s.
After the history, the talk concludes with a section on how the Hunter Fleet is operated today and maintained to its exceptionally high standard.
The talk will be adapted to suit the audience, concentrating more on local history, the history of the
Fleet or yacht maintenance as you would like. The talk is illustrated with a large selection of slides covering the history and up-to-date.
Hunter’s Fleet is owned and run by the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust, which is a charity with aims which include encouraging youth sailing: this is achieved by offering substantial discounts and assistance to youth organisations.
No charge is made for the talk but a donation to the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust would be appreciated to help with the aim of encouraging youth sailing; the amount is at your discretion.
Modest travelling expenses may be charged.
A selection of merchandise is brought for sale and a selection of old books on the Broads can be brought for browsing.
