Youth Sailing

Are you part of, or do you know of, a youth group or school with youngsters in need of a change of outdoor activity?  Why not bring them sailing?

The Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust encourages Youth Sailing on our Fleet as one of its main aims.  We believe the education that youngsters can get from working with ‘Mother Nature’ and others can be a life changing experience for them.

Hunter`s Youth Sailing

Hunter’s youth sailing was started back in 1968 when the Norfolk County Council bought Hunter’s Yard and set up an outdoors activity centre and sailing base to be used by schools. The county’s Chief Education Officer at that time was, Sir Lincoln Ralphs. He advocated education should not be confined to the classroom and that activities such as sailing were good for teaching children:

  • Discipline
  • Tolerance
  • Team work
  • How to understand the elements

Unique Opportunity

When the Council sold the Yard, it was bought by the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust and one of the main aims of the Trust when applying for a Lottery grant was to establish an endowment fund to support a preferential rate for schools and youth groups to continue this idea and encourage young people to sail. We believe this unique opportunity can help youngsters to:

  • take responsibility for self and others
  • problem solve
  • increase their self-confidence

Sailing on the Norfolk Broads

Sailing on the Norfolk Broads, on a beautiful vintage yacht, opens up a whole new world for many of these youngsters – our boats have no electricity… need we say more!

We have school groups, Scouts, Cadets and other types of youth organisations who are already enjoying the Fleet, coming year after year. They take the whole Fleet or maybe just a few boats with an experienced skipper on each boat and set sail for a week or perhaps just a few days.

Don’t have experienced skippers who can help?

If needed, we can put the organiser in touch with experienced sailors who are willing to help as part of their support of Hunters Fleet.

The Trust offers a 30% discount on all cabin yacht hire or short break half decker hire for organised youth groups.

Not sure if sailing is right for you and your youngsters?

If you are not able to sail and would like to bring some youngsters just for the experience you can always try our 2 hour skippered sail.  We can take up to 20 young people; or more in shifts and 2-3 supervisors at a time.

We provide you with experienced skippers for each boat and buoyancy jackets for everyone.

We offer a 20% discount on 2 hour sails for organised youth groups.

So many times we talk to someone who says “I sailed here when I was at school and I’ve never forgotten”.
